In the world of tax things are quiet…for the moment. Tax day, April 18th this year, has passed, and so the frenzy of tax season is behind us. On the horizon, though, we can see another storm forming. Senator Durbin hasn’t introduced his sales tax bill yet, the Main Street Fairness Act that would allow states to charge sales tax on companies without a physical presence in the state, but he is expected to bring the bill to the fl0or soon. Even without a sales tax bill in the Congress, the sales tax debate is still spreading. Arizona and California are considering affiliate tax bills, similar to the laws already on the books in New York, Rhode Island, North Carolina and Illinois. Meanwhile South Carolina seems poised to offer Amazon a package of tax breaks.
